Edwards, Jonathan
(5 oct. 1703, East Windsor, Conn.–22 mar. 1758, Princeton, N.J.).

Teólogo estadounidense. El quinto de 11 hijos de un hogar estrictamente puritano (ver puritanismo), ingresó a la Universidad de Yale a los 13 años de edad. En 1727 fue nombrado pastor en la iglesia de su abuelo en Northampton, Mass. Sus sermones sobre la "justificación sólo por la fe dieron origen a un renacimiento religioso en el valle del río Connecticut en 1734 y en la década de 1740, fue también una figura influyente en el Gran Despertar. En 1750 fue destituido de la iglesia de Northampton por un desacuerdo sobre quién merecía recibir la comunión y se convirtió en pastor en Stockbridge en 1751. Murió de viruela poco después de aceptar la rectoría de la Universidad de Nueva Jersey (actual Universidad de Princeton). Firme adherente al calvinismo, hizo hincapié en el pecado original, la predestinación y la necesidad de la conversión. Su sermón más famoso, "Los pecadores en manos de un Dios encolerizado, evoca vívidamente el destino de los pecadores impenitentes en el infierno.
